The brilliant Carl Sagan is into something with this poignant quote from his artillery of awesome quotes. It makes me ponder. It makes me think. It makes me want to throw my Macbook Pro off my lap, get my arse off the couch and sprint around the block looking up at the night sky only to return home and hide under the covers from an unbearable feeling of loneliness.
Loneliness, is like the moon to love's sun. One rises as the other falls.
I remember as a young boy, sitting in the back seat our our family car as dad drove home along the Western Highway. My ears would be filled with the sound of tyres churning, my cheek pressed against the rear window cold air creeping through the seals. And I would wonder. Looking up into the starlit sky. Galaxies before me. I would try and count the stars one by one and imagine how far away they must be, wondering if we were truly alone on our small planet.
A scary and somewhat inspiring thought for a young boy. The trouble is the vastness of the universe feels more immense as one grows older and time passes us by.
“For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love.”
Carl Sagan wonderfully captures an array of emotions from fear to loneliness, peacefulness to awe, friendship to love in his simple quote. That's why it has a place on our wedding invitations and is our first quote of the week.
